Review/Giveaway: EcoMom and Boon
Monday, May 17, 2010 at 9:59AM I will just start out very honestly with this review. I think the makers of Boon and I are soul mates. I have been lusting over literally every single Boon product since my pregnancy days. I love everything about what they make. They have this super cool eco friendly modern esthetic that I wholeheartedly dig. I love the colors, the lines, the ideas. Everything about them seems great, always drawing my attention online and in stores.
That being said, I have never actually tried any of their things. Mostly, it’s just been because Coraline wasn’t yet old enough for what they offer. They do a lot of feeding items and bath toys. They have a super cool highchair and toy storage. The point is, we are just entering the Boon stage of development.
My friends at EcoMom, literally one of my all time favorite online stores, were super nice to indulge my Boon obsession. It was hard to pick where to start! EcoMom has a huge assortment of fantastic feeding supplies, I spent about an hour one day looking at just spoons, cups and dishes. So when deciding what Boon product I was interested in I thought about what Cora is currently doing with her food. Basically she wants me to have no part in her eating. I am simply there to put the food on her tray. I am no longer allowed to feed her, relegated to doing dishes while she eats all by herself. She knows how to use a spoon, by which I mean if I put food on it, she can put it in her mouth. She is only 8 months old so she doesn’t get how to get the food onto her spoon.
Enter the fabulous Boon Squirt Spoon. Ecomom shipped the spoon out wicked fast to me, something I want to mention because fast shipping means a lot when you just bought something lust worthy, be it a spoon or cloth diaper. What happened to our lives? We lust for cloth diapers and spoons! Back to the point, EcoMom knows what they are doing in stocking such great items. The Boon spoon is no exception to the fabulous design Boon always seems to churn out.
EcoMom sent us the hot pink spoon. How to describe it? The body of the spoon is a rubbery kind of material (bpa, phthalate and pvc free of course), you unscrew the spoon part from the body of the spoon and fill it with food. It’s really ingenius if you ask me. It holds up to 3ounces of baby food and dispenses portions of the food onto the spoon part when you squeeze the bulb. I mean, this has made our life so much easier and actually pretty fun.
Every morning I pour Coraline’s baby yogurt breakfast into the Squirt Spoon and hand it to her. Now she has not quite mastered the fact that squeezing the rubbery pink part of the spoon makes the food come out, but it makes it easier for me to assist her in eating. When she has a regular spoon she will just not let it go so that I can put more food on. The Squirt Spoon makes it so easy, she can keep holding onto it and I can just squeeze more food out. It’s still messy, but easier. I don’t think there is any way to make feeding an 8 month old not messy.
Thanks to EcoMom, that’s not all! They also sent me the Boon Fluid Sippy Cup. First off I love that the hot pink color matches the spoon, soon she will have an entire matching set of dinnerware. There are tons of sippy cups out there and some are ok and some kinda suck. I don’t read those parenting books as you all probably well know by now, so I have no idea when a child is supposed to start drinking from a sippy. The Fluid Sippy has a recommended age of 9 months so I figured it was probably around now. We had tried some other cups in the past, starting when we were in the Caribbean and I was trying to make sure Cora got fluids in the hot weather. It didn’t go so well.
Other sippy cups are marketed as no spill, which is great because babies are definitely turing the cup every which way. It seemed to me though, with these no spill features, it also meant Cora basically could not get a drink. I tried sucking on some of them myself and discovered it was really difficult to get liquid out. It was way more difficult then a bottle or even a cup, I’m not sure how that is going to help her learning.
The Fluid Sippy is awesome. First off it is designed kind of like a donut, it has a big whole in the middle, turning the cup itself into a kind of handle. That was a huge part of why I picked it when I saw EcoMom carried it. This is a shape your child is already used to holding on to, they play with rings, teethers, and toys already in this form. A huge difference in the Fluid Sippy is the spout. It is angeled in such a way that Cora doesn’t have to hold it totally upside down like a bottle in order to get a drink. This to me means she is going to learn to drink like a big girl more easily.
She loves this cup! The Fluid Sippy is easy to fill, easy for baby and we have never had it leak. I tried it and getting a drink is easy, like getting a drink should be. Like I said in the beginning, Boon really knows what they are doing. EcoMom knows how to pick a great product, which is why I really love the site. Not only do I feel confident in their choices, I love that every product is listed with a section telling you why EcoMom likes it. How great is that? It’s basically like getting advice on great baby stuff from a trusted friend.
