Review/Giveaway: Origany Baby Clothes
Friday, February 26, 2010 at 9:01AM A trending theme in our household is what can we do to lessen our impact on the earth. Living with a major science nerd helps keep me grounded, focused on the fact that the earth and it's resources are not here for my disposal. From recycling to composting, cloth diapering to container gardening; our house is a bustle with the going green theme.
I've been hearing a lot about how terrible cotton farming is on our environment. I never gave it too much thought beyond the fact that I purchase natural fibers. That's good enough, right? Apparently not really. Without being certified organic, cotton farms use pesticides and chemicals to keep insects from destroying crops. 10% of the worlds pesticides and 25% of the worlds insecticides are used in cotton production. Some of the things they are spraying on your cotton = the EPA's top cancer causing chemicals. What is that about? Why is that ok for my daughter? Even when used properly these chemicals are harming farm workers, wildlife and the environment. In essence, we are ruining the earth for some cheap clothes. I don't feel very good about that at all. In fact, I feel pretty badly about the clothes I am wearing, for being excited when I got a good deal on cheap tank tops. More importantly it makes me want to change what we are doing and what we are teaching our children as well.

I was excited to find Origany, a children's clothing company that cares as much as I do, about what touches Coraline. Founded on a belief that clothing should be eco friendly, environmentally conscious and stylish all at once. All Origany textiles come from certified organic farms, from cotton to baby Alpca (a baby Alpaca is called a Cria). Even their dyes are eco friendly and natural!
We were given the opportunity to try the Kimono Long Sleeve Baby Bodysuit and Baby Yoga Pant. I immediately noticed a difference in these clothes! When I unwrapped them, I could not believe how soft this cotton was, I mean, really soft. I guess chemicals have a lot of impact on the quality of the textiles after all!
We love this outfit. Something I particularly like about the bodysuit is that it has snaps in the right places. This must have been designed by a parent because generally I don't care for the kimono style. The other kimono style bodysuits we have tried have all had some kind of gaping going on, for lack of snaps where needed. Two snaps on the inside, three snaps on the outside, snaps in the bottom for easy diaper changes. It was easy to put on, Cora is a fan because it doesn't have to go over her head. We asked for a size 6-12 months , I was a little worried about sizing. Coraline is in the 97th precentile for height and the 44th for weight, what it boils down to is that I have a tall and skinny baby. We are just about out of our 12 month Onesies, so it's always hard to say what will fit. This actually came as a delightful surprise, just at her 6 month mark and Cora will definitely fit in this Kimono Bodysuit for a few months. Have I mentioned how soft it is?
It looks fabulous with the coordinating Baby Yoga Pant. You can see that we got the white Kimono Bodysuit with black piping and the black Yoga Pant with white piping. The pants we ordered in something larger because Coraline's legs are insanely long, a 12-18 month size fits her well, with some room to grow. The picture to the left shows just how long her legs are, she is just 6 months old and this is a 12-18 month size! I also love that so much of their clothing line is gender neutral, which makes for a great baby shower gift for parents who haven't found out the gender prior to birth. I personally got really sick of all the yellow and green, I would have much rather had things from Origany in blacks and whites.
Each piece is made very well. We wore and washed them several times to see how they held up and they still look brand new. Nothing faded, nothing pilled. I could not be happier with this clothing. As Coraline grows, we will continue to purchase clothing from Origany. I can tell that these are items I will hold on to, things that will last for more then one baby, I'm sure. Between you and me, I can not wait for Cora to be big enough to fit into this Baby Alpaca/Organic Cotton Knit Dress…
